How are engines made?
Engines are made by pouring molten iron into sand molds. This process is called casting. Another way they are made is by putting red hot iron into a stamping machine. This process is called forging.
How do they create power? |
How many different types of engines are there? |
The pistons ignite the gas/air mix while moving up and down at high speeds. The up and down motion of the pistons is converted to a rotary motion in the crankshaft and axle. The axle moves and steers the car.
What are they made out of?Engine blocks are made of iron or an aluminium alloy.
|
There is 6 different types of engines. They are inline, boxer, V type, rotary, w type, and deisel.
When were they invented?Internal combustion engines were invented in 1680, but gasoline engines weren’t invented until 1862.
|
Who invented them? What were they invented for?
Nikolaus a. Otto. A German inventor born June 14, 1832 in Holzhausen, Germany. He invented the internal combustion engine and also the four stroke engine.
|
They were invented to turn chemical energy such as gasoline into mechanical energy.
|
What are the main producers? |
What is the difference between gas and diesel? |
Toyota, Volkswagon, hyundai, general motors, and ford are the top five producers of engines. |
Gas is mixed with air and gas then compressed and ignited. Air is compressed then diesel is injected and ignited. |
What is the main part of the engine? |
How does a spark plug work? |
cylinder/ cylinder block is the main part of the engine. It performs functions including housing the exhaust and intake valves and fuel injector. |
It's job is to ignite the air fuel mixture. |
How do pistons work? Does diesel or gas pollute more?
Compresses the air fuel mixture or just air, it depends on the type of engine. |
Diesel vehicles produce more particulate matter while gas vehicles produce more gaseous pollution.
